PostHeaderIcon Public Speaking and Private Conversation

Private conversation and public speaking are very similar. The only difference is that in a speech there is no exchange of remarks. Apart from that a speech is conversation with more than one person listening. For example when a man or woman is speaking to one person and another joins them. More people join the group and as it grows the conversationalist is now making a speech. He will have raised his voice so that all can hear him and the most effective style for the speaker is to retain the informal manner.

PostHeaderIcon Public Speaking Basics

In public speaking there must be a  good reason for making a speech.  Select a timely subject that is of current public concern. Learn all you can about the subject as “knowledge is power.” You will only master your audience when you have mastered your subject.  Because a speaker in doubt will not speak with conviction.

There must not only be belief in the subject,  it must also be logically presented. Too many speeches not only lack purpose but are also lacking in planning.  Thorough preparation and proper presentation are of primary importance.

The idea you convey may not be popular, but if you present it sincerely and logically, you can still put your viewpoint accross. You can earn respect personally even if your ideas are not accepted by the audience.

PostHeaderIcon Importance of Public Speaking

Effective speaking is such unbeatable value. If you have a dollar and I have a dollar and we exchange dollars we both end up with only one dollar each. If we both exchange an idea we each end up with two ideas each.

Public speaking can not be valued in dollars and cents for it accumulates intangible assets. Businesses are developed and professions advanced. A person who can express his ideas clearly will acquire more prestige than five years hard grinding work. Public speaking is a public relations goldmine.

The person who receives the most favourable reknown and most respect is the person who delivers a few well chosen words on the subject being discussed.   This is true in conversation as well as public speaking

More people have talked themselves to prominence than all the other fields of endeavour combined.  The succesful business person realises this and joins in.

The most important concept of public speaking  is that it is about the sincere conveying of ideas rather than polished performance and is therefore in the grasp of anyone who takes the time to apply themselves to the art.

PostHeaderIcon Public Speaking is Not One of The Arts

A strange start to my blog to say that speaking is not an art after calling my blog ’The Art of Great Speaking’. Let me explain….

Public speaking cannot be considered as a fine art. Its purpose is to convey ideas; not to put on a performance . You will lose your audience’s attention if your mind wanders from the ideas you hope to convey and you wonder if they are impressed by your platform appearance, studied gestures or polished delivery,

Audiences are interested in the idea you came to convey not on your showmanship. If that idea offers a fresh approach or a well-considered opinion, you’ve hit pay dirt and got yourself a gusher; but if you give out only harangue and hurrah, you’ll rate as only another gasser.

There are techniques and skills anyone can develop that will improve the transmission of the ideas in speaking to group and individuals. It is these techniques and skills that support the delivery of ideas that are the art.
